Canada vs Bosnia Herzegovina: Easy Half Time World Cup Recipes

Let’s be honest: You may not have had a Bosnian snack, and you’ve definitely never had a Canadian one that isn’t poutine.

Today’s World Cup matchup is the perfect excuse to fix that. Two cold-weather countries. Two warm-your-soul half-time bites. No passports required.

Team Canada: Maple Bacon Poutine Nachos (10 minutes)

Why it works: Nachos are familiar. Poutine is beloved. Together? Viral potential.

Ingredients:

  • 1 bag thick-cut tortilla chips

  • 1 cup cheese curds (or shredded mozzarella in a pinch)

  • 1 cup gravy (canned or instant is fine)

  • 4 strips bacon, cooked crispy and chopped

  • 2 tbsp maple syrup

  • Optional: fresh parsley or green onions

Instructions:

  1. Arrange chips on a baking sheet or large plate.

  2. Sprinkle cheese curds evenly over chips.

  3. Warm gravy in microwave or saucepan (30 seconds).

  4. Drizzle hot gravy over chips and cheese.

  5. Top with crispy bacon pieces and a drizzle of maple syrup.

  6. Serve immediately while cheese is melty.

Halftime Hack: Cook bacon before kickoff. Reheat gravy during the anthem.

Team Bosnia: Mini Burek Rolls (15 minutes)

Why it works: Burek is a flaky, meat-filled pastry that Bosnians eat with yogurt. This version uses frozen phyllo (no from-scratch stress).

Sigara BörekIngredients:

  • 6 sheets frozen phyllo dough (thawed)

  • ½ lb ground beef or lamb

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • Salt, pepper, paprika

  • ¼ cup melted butter or oil

  • Plain yogurt for dipping (non-negotiable)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. Cook filling: Sauté onion 2 minutes. Add ground meat, salt, pepper, paprika. Cook until browned (5 minutes).

  3. Assemble rolls: Lay one phyllo sheet flat. Brush with melted butter. Add 2 tbsp filling along one short edge. Roll up tightly like a cigar.

  4. Repeat with remaining sheets.

  5. Bake 10-12 minutes until golden brown and crispy.

  6. Serve warm with a side of plain yogurt for dipping.

Halftime Hack: Make filling completely before kickoff. Roll and bake during halftime (12 minutes fits perfectly).
